Fireplace and Stove Glossary for UK Homeowners
27th Feb 2026
Choosing a fireplace or stove can feel overwhelming if you are unfamiliar with the terminology used by manufacturers, installers and showrooms. From flue types and heat output to regulatory terms such as Ecodesign and DEFRA approved, the language around fires and stoves can be confusing for first time buyers and even experienced homeowners.

This glossary has been created by Manor House Fireplaces & Stoves to explain the most common fireplace and stove terms used in the UK. It is designed to help you make confident, informed decisions when selecting a new fireplace, wood burning stove, gas fire or electric fire for your home.
Airwash System
An airwash system directs a flow of air across the inside of the stove glass. This helps keep the glass cleaner for longer by reducing soot and tar build up and improving visibility of the flames.
Balanced Flue
A balanced flue is a sealed flue system used for gas fires. It draws air in from outside and expels combustion gases through a single concentric pipe. This type of flue is ideal for properties without a traditional chimney.
Baffle Plate
A baffle plate sits inside a stove and helps direct hot gases around the firebox before they exit through the flue. This increases efficiency and improves heat output. Baffle plates are a consumable part and may need replacing over time.
Chimney Liner
A chimney liner is a flexible or rigid tube installed inside a chimney. It improves safety and efficiency by ensuring smoke and gases are properly contained and expelled. Liners are often required for stove installations and when converting open fireplaces.
Convector Stove
A convector stove uses air channels around the firebox to circulate warm air into the room. This provides a more even heat distribution compared to radiant stoves, which mainly emit heat directly from the stove body.
DEFRA Approved
DEFRA approved stoves are designed to burn wood more cleanly and are permitted for use in smoke control areas. These appliances comply with government standards for reduced smoke emissions.
Ecodesign
Ecodesign refers to EU and UK regulations that set minimum efficiency and emission standards for wood burning and multi fuel stoves. All new stoves sold in the UK must now meet Ecodesign requirements, offering cleaner burning and improved efficiency.
Fireplace Surround
A fireplace surround is the decorative frame around a fire or stove. It can be made from materials such as stone, marble, wood or cast iron and helps define the style of the fireplace within the room.
Firebox
The firebox is the internal chamber where fuel is burned. Its size and design affect heat output, efficiency and the types of fuel that can be used.
Flue
A flue is the passage through which smoke and gases are expelled from a fireplace or stove. It may be a chimney, a flue liner or a twin wall flue system for properties without chimneys.
Flue Draught
Flue draught refers to the upward flow of air that pulls smoke and gases out of the appliance. Poor draught can cause smoke to enter the room, while excessive draught can reduce efficiency.
Freestanding Stove
A freestanding stove is a standalone appliance that can be positioned in a room with a suitable hearth and flue connection. These are available as wood burning, multi fuel, gas or electric models.
Gas Safe Registered
Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement for engineers installing or servicing gas appliances in the UK. Always ensure your gas fire installer is Gas Safe registered.
Hearth
A hearth is the non combustible base beneath a fireplace or stove. It protects the floor from heat and falling embers and must meet UK building regulations for size and thickness.
Heat Output
Heat output is measured in kilowatts and indicates how much heat a fire or stove produces. Choosing the correct heat output for your room size is essential for comfort and efficiency.
HETAS Registered
HETAS is the official body for solid fuel installations in the UK. HETAS registered installers are trained and approved to fit wood burning and multi fuel stoves safely and legally.
Hole in the Wall Fire
A hole in the wall fire is a modern fireplace style where the appliance is recessed into the wall, creating a sleek and contemporary look. These are available in gas and electric versions.
Inset Stove
An inset stove is built into an existing fireplace opening or wall recess. It combines the appearance of a traditional fireplace with the efficiency of a modern stove.
Multi Fuel Stove
A multi fuel stove is designed to burn a range of fuels such as wood, smokeless coal and briquettes. These stoves include a riddling grate and ash pan for solid fuels.
Open Fireplace
An open fireplace is a traditional style of fire where the flames are exposed. While visually appealing, open fires are less efficient than stoves and modern inset fires.
Radiant Stove
A radiant stove emits heat directly from its outer surfaces. These stoves warm the area immediately around them and create a strong focal point in a room.
Smoke Control Area
A smoke control area is a designated zone where only authorised fuels and DEFRA approved stoves can be used. Many urban and suburban areas in the UK fall within these zones.
Spigot
A spigot is the flue outlet on a stove that connects to the flue pipe or chimney liner.
Twin Wall Flue
A twin wall flue is an insulated flue system used when there is no chimney. It allows stoves and fires to be installed in properties without existing flues.
Ventilation
Ventilation refers to the air supply required for safe combustion. Larger stoves and open fires often need additional room ventilation to comply with building regulations.
Why Understanding These Terms Matters
Knowing the correct terminology helps you choose the right appliance for your home, ensures compliance with UK regulations and allows you to have clearer conversations with installers and showroom staff. It also reduces the risk of purchasing an unsuitable fire or stove for your property.
